Low-income older adults face many challenges when applying for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). As a result, only 2 in 5 seniors who are eligible for SNAP enroll in the program.

Outreach by community-based organizations is critical to reducing senior hunger. The resources below are designed to help your organization increase SNAP enrollment among older adults in your community.

Tools for Professionals

  • BenefitsCheckUp.org: Use this free website to help seniors find food and nutrition programs in their state. The SNAP Map includes state-specific program information, application forms, and other resources in your area.
  • Nutrition Advocacy Toolkit: Learn how you can protect federally funded nutrition programs that help millions of seniors who are struggling with hunger.

Promising Strategies

  • Making dinner a SNAP: Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging (AAA), Inc. uses supermarket screening booths and food demonstrations to help eligible seniors apply for SNAP and learn to prepare healthy meals.
