Prescription for Better Health

CVS and NCOA are partnering with senior centers throughout the country to help seniors take better care of their health. We are focused on helping seniors through:

  • Education
  • Health screenings
  • Better access to benefits

NCOA and CVS/Pharmacy are also sponsoring the Better Health and Wellness Awards.

The 2009 Prescription for Better Health Program makes valuable health services available to senior center participants and members.

This Program has 3 components available at no cost:

  1. Pack your Bag: Free Medication Consultations for senior centers. See the Program Overview for more information (pdf file).

    • Your local CVS Pharmacist will visit your senior center and conduct  free information sessions on the health issues of greatest concern to seniors today, including
      • Preventing drug interactions and managing medications effectively.
      • Understanding high blood pressure.
      • Controlling high cholesterol.
      • Saving money with Medicare Part D.
    • Plus, seniors will have an opportunity to spend one-on-one time with a CVS Pharmacist including:
      • Understanding all prescription and over-the-counter medications that a senior is taking.
      • Counseling seniors on a wide range of topics such as: correct medication usage, potential interactions, proper storage, generic availability, and adverse reactions.
      • Helping seniors with discussion topics for their physician, and answering any other specific questions.
    • Senior centers that have participated in this program have given it rave reviews:

"We welcome any new programs partnering with our friends at CVS."
      - Brighton Senior Center (MI)

"This program should be done for the seniors every quarter. They truly enjoyed the program."
      - Brunswick Multi-Purpose Center (GA)

"Very informative. Well worth seniors time. It was beneficial to them."
      - Heritage Hall Senior Center (TX)

"This is a very instrumental program for the seniors because a lot of times they are taking duplicate medications without knowing."
      - Independence Heights Community Center (TX)

"Please continue to offer these important programs in our communities." - SHARE Club (FL)

  2. Health Screenings & Clinics
    • CVS/pharmacy has made it easy and convenient for seniors to get access to the healthcare resources they need.  Senior centers will receive special invitations for their members, clients, and participants to attend clinics on:
      • Blood pressure
      • Cholesterol
      • Bone density
      • Flu clinics and more!
    • All are available at convenient neighborhood CVS/pharmacy locations.

  3. Assistance Finding Government & Private Benefits Programs
There are many assistance programs available to help seniors in need pay for:
    • Prescription medications
    • Healthcare
    • Heating assistance
    • Transportation and more!
Through a free BenefitsCheckUp on-line screening, seniors and their families, friends and caregivers can find programs for which they are likely eligible.

When you collaborate with your local CVS Pharmacy, you'll receive...

  • Turn-key programs that staff can easily make available to the center's members and participants
  • Invitations to participate in these programs throughout the year
  • The opportunity to forge a year-round relationship with your local CVS Pharmacist.

The Prescription for Better Health Program is being introduced in 2008 to senior centers across the country. The program's reach will span more than 25 states and Washington, D.C.

If you are interested in joining as a participating center, please contact us directly. We would be pleased to explore with CVS whether or not they could support your location.

Let us know of your interest in the program or if you have any questions:

Please e-mail Gina Hill at NCOA or call her at 202-479-6970.
