The National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC) is a dynamic network of professionals who represent the senior center field, which serves over several million older Americans each year through community-based senior centers nationwide. These professionals and their centers serve as effective agents for the provision of services and opportunities to older people. (See background on senior centers.)
The Institute serves as the most appropriate vehicle for coordination, communication, action, and guidance to the Senior Center field on a national level. Promoting the growth, development, and expansion of Senior Centers; developing Senior Center leadership; working to improve the quality of activities and services in Senior Centers; and enhancing the Senior Center image are among the many purposes of NISC.
The following eight priorities have been identified by NISC to accomplish its purpose:
- Grow NISC membership.
- Grow, strengthen, and institutionalize the accreditation process.
- Sponsor quality-training opportunities and generate useful technical assistance pieces that support senior centers.
- Create a marketing plan that effectively promotes NISC through Web site, e-newsletter, and other communication strategies.
- Advocate for legislation important to senior centers and our customers.
- Develop a dynamic partnership with NCOA focused on shared priorities.
- Develop research tools and disseminate research that validates the benefits of senior centers.
- Validate the worth and elevate the status of senior center professionals.
