Previously, RespectAbility conducted a first-of-its-kind survey of a select group of the nation’s leading non-profit organizations that shows nonprofits are largely unequipped to use older Americans as volunteers, even though the rapidly growing ranks of retirement-age Americans could provide a valuable resource for such groups.
Through its RespectAbility initiative, NCOA raises awareness about issues facing an aging America. One way is by contributing funds to and promoting The Open Road: America Looks at Aging, a public television documentary that premiered in July 2005. This film examines the personal and social impact of the baby boomers' retirement.
The show includes insightful stories of individuals confronting the obstacles--and pursuing the opportunities--that the "third stage" of life presents. Through their stories, the film probes the important social, economic, and cultural issues at stake.
