NISC Seeks Nominations for 2010 Senior Center Research Award

Recognition of Research in the Senior Center Field
Call for Nominations 2010

The National Institute of Senior Centers announces its sixteenth annual Research Award to recognize outstanding research in the senior center field.  Submission deadline is by close of business day Friday, May 29, 2009.

Only research published after January 1, 2006-- including journal articles, dissertations, books, and other research documents -- pertaining to the administration, operation, or programming of senior centers will be considered.

The research must make a substantive contribution to knowledge and understanding of the senior center field and stimulate questions for further research in the field.  In the past, areas investigated have included volunteer services, best senior center practices, intergenerational programs, etc.  Other areas of interest to NISC include, but are not limited to:

  • health promotion, evidenced based programs, wellness and prevention models
  • the role and function of the senior center of the future
  • replicable outcome measures of senior center programs
  • the design of consumer-based senior center programs
  • the role of senior centers with civic engagement fostering community involvement

Other criteria include: potential long-term impact on public policy; potential usefulness for senior center practice; creativity and depth of analysis; and quality of literary style, readability, and format.  Replicability will also be a factor.

Individuals or organizations may be nominated; self-nomination is encouraged. Current NCOA/NISC paid staff or consultants are not eligible, nor will NCOA/NISC-funded research be considered.

Nomination forms are available from the NISC Coordinator by calling 202/479-6667 or e-mailing Maureen.Arsenaut@ncoa.org or by visiting www.ncoa.org. A cash award of $1,500 goes to the researcher(s) with a $500 to the senior center/s involved with the research. In addition to these awards, a plaque to the sponsoring entity, if identified, will be presented at NISC's annual spring membership meeting to be held during the joint national conference of The National Council on the Aging and American Society on Aging in Chicago, Illinois .   Travel and related costs for one investigator to present findings and accept award will be paid in full (some restrictions apply) or shared, depending on circumstances.
