2009 CANDIDATES

Jayne Colino - Massachusetts:
I have functioning as a Council on Aging/Senior Center Director in Newton, Mass. since August 1990.  I have served in varying leadership positions in our state association on MCOA, and currently serve on the MCOA Executive Committee.   I have served as the NISC State Delegate from Mass. For the last 2.6 years and would like to continue to serve in this capacity.  I see the importance of involvement in my local network and support to my professional peers in advancing the senior center network's professionalism.

Nikki Panico - Pennsylvania:
As Associate Director of Senior Community Services, I oversee all aspects of operation for four multi-purpose senior centers, three Centers Without Walls programs, a Center for Life Long Learning and the agency-wide volunteer program.  This oversight included the projects, personnel, marketing, community partnerships, etc. I also currently serve Senior Centers at the state level by serving as a board member of the Pennsylvania Association of Senior Centers.  I am a full believer in the NISC Accreditation process having gone through the process with my four Centers.  I have worked for a wide variety of aging-related organizations and have a Master's degree in Gerontological Services from St. Joseph's University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
I am fully committed to work diligently to assist in caring the NISC mission across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as its delegate.  I have the full support of my Executive Director and Board.

Shelley Harrington-Johnson - Georgia:
I have appointed to fill the Barbara Prasch's vacated position as the Georgia Delegate.  In addition, I have been a senior center director (7+yrs) and previously worked for the Area Agency on Aging as will all non-Medicaid funded programs including the oversight of ten senior centers in a diverse region of the state.  As the aging population grows and the aging network is being redefined by  both the public and private sectors, I would like to see the role of senior centers in their local communities enhanced and not diminished.  I see my involvement with NISC as a two-fold opportunity one to inform senior centers what NISC is doing on their behalf and what is happening at the national level as well as bringing back ideas from other parts of the country.  The second opportunity is to represent the needs of the senior centers to NISC.

Patricia Jackson - Georgia:
If I can be able to be a delegate for Georgia Senior Center Managers, I would like to work on training for Center Managers.  I hope this training would include technology, customer service, and health and wellness concerns just to name a few.  I know this would be a great opportunity not only for myself but also for the other DeKalb County Georgia Center Managers with whom I work and represent.

Stacie Shatzer - North Carolina:
Over the past eight years I have worked to develop a multipurpose senior center that has earned our North Carolina Center of Excellence status.  I was the first chair of the North Carolina Senior Center Alliance and continue to serve on the steering committee for this state association for senior centers.  I have an interest in learning more about the National Institute for Senior Centers as well as sharing that knowledge with other North Carolina Senior Centers.  My center is working towards National Accreditation and once complete I would like to assist others who desire the same.

Peggy Houston - Tennessee:
Statement:  I have served the senior population of Tennessee on the county, district, state and national levels for over thirty years.  Thrice I have been a delegate to the TN Governor's Conference on Aging and the White House Conference on Aging. As a NISC Delegate, I hope to strengthen senior centers across the U.S. as focal points for senior services and help develop research tools senior centers may use to validate their impact and worth.  I will gladly assume any responsibilities NISC assigns, with the full support of my senior center's board and the TASC who will pay my expenses.

Mary Futrell - Illinois:
I look forward to continuing to serve as a NISC delegate, advocating for senior centers locally and nationally.  I can offer the committee my experience working in educational programming and operations management for the past ten years in museums, senior living communities, and senior centers.  I have also been very active in local community organizations, developing a community leadership program for seniors, and coordinating our local "Aging Well" conference for three years.  I am committed to providing opportunities resources to seniors to continue to age well.  North Shore Senior  Center fully supports  my participation as a NISC delegate.

Diane Lanaville - Wisconsin:
16 years as Director and navigating the construction of a new facility, I have experienced broad range of usual and unusual challenges and survived with a successful multi-purpose program in place.  Chair of the Wisconsin Association of Senior Centers Accreditation Committee seven years.  Attended the 2005 White House Conference on Aging as Alternate Delegate and volunteer.  Support from local agency and State Assoc. to serve at the national level.  Eager to incorporate experiences to contribute to the well being of older adults and help meet unique needs of those "coming of age" through promotion of strong vital Senior Centers.

Diana Morales Taylor - Texas:
The YWCA Greater Houston provides nutrition services, evidence based programming and all types of health information to more than 1,500 seniors per day in congregate and home-delivered meal settings.  As the CEO of the organization I have more than five years of experience leading these programs.  We are concerned as our mission states with the elimination of racism and empowerment of women.  We recognize that for the most part women represent a large majority of the aging population and minorities have the most challenges in accessing quality services in the health, cultural, and economic arenas.

Nicole Heaps - Arkansas:
I am passionate about improving the lives of older Americans.  I have enjoyed my first brief term as a delegate as it has given me an opportunity to meet movers and shakers of senior service providers.  I hope to assist NISC to further in its efforts to advocate for seniors and provide resources for senior center professionals.  I have received approval from my "paid position" to attend meeting sand work on NISC items.
