August 18, 2008

In 2008, CVS and NCOA initiated a new award; its purpose was to highlight best practices in programming that provides seniors in their communities with access to activities, education or resources and promotes a healthy lifestyle.

One award winner and five honorable mentions
were chosen for the 2008 CVS/NCOA Prescription for Better Health and Wellness Award.

Our 2008 award winner & honorable mentions were:

  • Madison Senior Center (Madison, N.J.)  Stay Healthy program
  • TMC Senior Resource Center (Tucson, Ariz.)  Healthy Living Connections
  • Cabarrus County Senior Center (Concord, N.C.) The Wellness Report Card
  • Mecosta County Senior Center (Mecosta, Mich.)  Personal Action Toward Health (P.A.T.H.)
  • Grantsville Senior Center (Grantsville, Md.)  Standing Strong: Evidence Based Falls Prevention Program
  • Two Rivers Senior Center (Two Rivers, Wis.)  Breakfast for your Brain program.

They shared their senior center healthy aging best practices during webinars in May of 2008.

We are pleased to announce our 2009 CVS/NCOA Prescription for Better Health and Wellness Competition

The competition will begin on November 1st and end on November 30th, 2008.   Applications will only be accepted in that timeframe.  We will share these best practices in senior center health programming in webinars held in the Spring.

In 2009, we are conducting seven state-wide CVS/NCOA Prescription for Better Health and Wellness competitions.  These pilot programs will be administered by the senior center state associations in Rhode Island, Tennessee, Michigan, Indiana, North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania.  Applications will be due in September or October of 2008.  The winners from the statewide competition will automatically be entered into the national competition.   For more information on who is running the competition in your state email Maureen Arsenault, NISC Coordinator at nisc.coordinator@ncoa.org

Become a participating center!   Through the 2008 Prescription for Better Health Program,  CVS and NCOA are partnering with senior centers throughout the country to help seniors take better care of their health.  They are focused on helping seniors through:
