BoomerANG Project Earns 2007 Research Award
January 16, 2007

Boomers-Aging’s Next Generation” of Montgmery County, Pennsylvania

The National Institute of Senior Center’s Research Award for 2007 goes to the BoomerANG Project, for research that was conducted in conjunction with senior centers and other organizations in Montgomery County, PA.

This award recognizes outstanding, innovative research in the senior center field. NISC will present the award during the joint conference of NCOA and the American Society on Aging on March 7, 2007, in Chicago.

The leadership of Montgomery County’s senior centers and the Office of Aging and Adult Services (MCAAS) undertook serious, well-informed research into the status, needs, and opportunities that exist for the leading-edge baby boomer generation and current residents who are 60 or older.

An innovative public/private partnership included MCAAS and project funders from local foundations.  Two nationally recognized consultants, Dr. John Migliaccio and Mr. Michael Marcus, conducted an extensive analysis, review, and assessment of the 10 MCAAS-supported senior centers in Montgomery County. They recommended an appropriate and responsive strategy for the county’s changing circumstances, needs, and opportunities.

The BoomerANG Project included a visioning and “asset mapping” process engaging businesses, faith groups, educators, civic groups, human services organizations, government, and citizens in each of Montgomery County’s five regions.

The project investigated, at both countywide and regional levels, the programs and services those senior centers or other community-based organizations should provide in the next decade. Many senior centers needed to understand how their organizations must adapt and how community partnerships must be created to meet these needs.

The project also included consumer telephone surveys with baby boomers and older adults and researched best practices from a variety of service delivery models.

A presentation on this research will take place at the NCOA - American Society on Aging conference in Chicago, IL, on March 8, 2007, at 10:30 a.m.
