Stories of Impact

Jose discovered how to cope with the challenges of a stroke after taking a chronic disease workshop.

In collaboration with our community partners, NCOA significantly improved the health of more than 142,500* older adults from July 2011 through June 2012. 

Chronic Conditions

In the past year:

  • More than 100,000* older adults participated in nearly 4,600 Chronic Disease Self-Management Program community workshops nationwide.
  • Approximately 30,500* older adult clients at 114 sites in 27 states participated in evidence-based community depression care management programs, nearly double the previous year.
  • More than 2,000* adults participated in nearly 100 online Better Choices, Better Health® online workshops nationwide and in Canada.

Falls Prevention

In the past year:

  • Over 10,000* older adults participated in evidence-based falls prevention programs across the country.
  • 46 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico participated in the annual Falls Prevention Awareness Day in September.
  • NCOA expanded its website to include an interactive map of state coalitions, state falls-injury profiles, and a popular Falls Prevention Awareness Day resource section.

Community Education

In the past year:

  • More than 5,000 older adults participated in NCOA sponsored community education programs on diabetes, financial education, Medicare benefits, medical imaging safety, and osteoarthritis.
