2012 Impact Report

Stories of Impact

One Away captured seniors telling their own stories of struggle.

NCOA is a national leader and voice for vulnerable and disadvantaged older adults and the organizations that serve them.

In the past year:

  • NCOA’s One Away campaign collected and shared more than 5,000 personal stories of struggling older adults; generated 30,000 letters to Congress; and encouraged 30 organizations and over 2,000 citizen advocates to express their support for protecting and strengthening the Older Americans Act.

  • NCOA successfully advocated for $10 million in new federal funding for chronic disease self-management programs.

  • As part of a national collaborative effort, NCOA educated hundreds of aging and disability advocates on how they can help their state implement health reform provisions that improve access to home and community-based services.

  • NCOA worked with partners to successfully protect Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries from harmful proposed budget cuts.

Looking Ahead

In the coming year, we plan to:

  • Promote reauthorization and funding of the OAA to address the diverse needs of our nation’s growing population of older adults—particularly those who are disadvantaged.

  • Lead efforts among senior groups to ensure that proposals to reduce federal spending take a balanced approach and protect vulnerable older Americans.

  • Improve access to evidence-based chronic care interventions.

  • Protect and strengthen access to home and community-based services and supports through effective implementation of provisions in the Affordable Care Act.
