Why?

Why Civic Engagement?

These days, many organizations--corporations and nonprofits of all sizes--have big goals and small resources. Money, time, and talent are scarce. Ultimately, the lack of financial resources limits the effect an organization can have.

Today’s older adults face a different challenge. They have time and talent to give, and often will share their experience for free or for a small out of pocket reimbursement with an organization they feel is deserving. But when they offer to help, organizations frequently underestimate or undervalue their abilities and experience.

NCOA recognizes this dilemma but also sees a significant opportunity--the chance to connect willing and plentiful older adult volunteers with the needs of organizations working to address important community issues. NCOA’s Civic Engagement initiatives provide practical ways to make this match real and successful, benefiting the organizations, the older adults, and the communities they both serve.

Learn how to increase opportunities to build and sustain an effective civic engagement strategy in your community or organization.
